Description

Room Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTIL) have structural features on longer length scales than ordinary liquids. But how does the structure influence the dynamics and transport properties of these liquids?

Combining dielectric spectroscopy and quasielastic neutron scattering we have access to time scales from pico- to kilosecond and follow relaxation dynamics and transport properties in the liquid from above the melting point and all the way down to the glass transition. We find that while the structure of RTILs is complex the dynamics is simple - which suggests that the longer range structure has little influence on the dynamics.
