Abstract:
This seminar begins with a general presentation of the field of pulsed power technology and its applications. The functionality and performance requirements of these systems are discussed both qualitatively and quantitatively in evaluating the state-of-the-art. Then, the European Spallation Source linear accelerator, powered by pulsed converters called klystron modulators, is considered. It is shown that these klystron modulators face unprecedented requirements, which necessitated a comprehensive R&D effort in developing a novel pulsed power topology now called the Stacked Multi-Level (SML) modulator. The foundations and complete development of these modulators, culminating in the klystron modulators in operation at ESS today, is described in detail. The seminar ends with a Q&A session.
