Intended Audience

This school is designed for instrument scientists and any ESS staff—both scientific and engineering—who want to learn the fundamental DMSC tools for manipulating and visualizing ESS data.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this school, participants will be able to:

1.     Simulate Neutron Experiments:

·      Run simple neutron experiment simulations using McStas to generate synthetic yet realistic data.

2.     Use Scipp for Data Reduction/Analysis:

·      Import experimental data into Scipp

·      Manipulate and visualize data using Scipp’s tools

3.     Apply Data Reduction Techniques:

·      Perform common data reduction tasks such as masking bad data

·      Convert data from detector space to physical units (e.g., wavelength and d-spacing) using Scipp

4.     Manage Data Using SciCat:

·      Store both raw and processed data in the SciCat metadata catalogue

·      Apply FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data management principles

Format

The school is based on hands-on, guided exercises using Jupyter Notebooks.
