In combination with the development of light-element optimised neutron diffractometers, hydrogen-deuterium isotopic substitution has developed over the past three decades into a very powerful component in the experimental toolkit available for the structural characterisation of liquids, solutions and complex fluids. By judicious choice of isotopic labelling, it is now possible to obtain unprecedented insight into the atomistic details of intermolecular organisation in aqueous or organic solvent systems, on length scales ranging from the length of the shortest hydrogen bond to many tens of nanometres. In this talk, I will outline the underpinning principles of the method and the current instrumentation available at ISIS for this kind of work. Throughout, I will illustrate the scientific value by using a selection of recent highlights drawn from my research programmes investigating the structure and associated properties of deep eutectic solvents and micelle forming aqueous solutions.
