Description
Diamond Light Source, the UK national synchrotron, is used by many thousands of researchers from the UK and many other countries each year. It works like a giant microscope, harnessing the power of electrons to produce bright light that can be used to study anything from fossils to jet engines to viruses and vaccines. Frequently the boundaries of the research extend across many other geographically distributed scientific facilities and resources and optimising the process of communication and sharing of results and data are pivotal to success. This talk will describe in more detail examples of our work and then go on to discuss the practical challenges to which this leads in terms of data volumes, acquisition, analysis and the computing resources needed. From the inception of Diamond we appreciated the value of providing a unique identity for each of our thousands of users for security and ease of collaboration together with the requirements to enable transparency and optimisation of processes. The remaining discussion will describe briefly the architecture in place and then continue with our design to extend this across multiple scientific facilities using common identity providers such as Umbrella and Orcid.
