Description
Scientific publications are and will remain the primary source to measure scientific impact. However, the simple metric of publications, citations and journals impact is largely ignoring societal impact and becomes increasingly inappropriate for facilities, application developers or primary scientific data [1]. Principles of Open Access are more and more extended towards scientific data, requested by funding agencies, scientific communities and publishers likewise. This demands not only to establish data managements plans prior to scientific experiments, grant applications or publications, but also the preparation of scientific data in a form permitting data publication, sharing, re-use and mining. The Research Data Alliance (RDA) [2] establishes the fundamentals of global, inter-operable scientific data sharing. The Photon and Neutron research communities are taking part in this endeavor [3,4] to ensure that the rather special demands from these scientific communities are taken into account when shaping global data services. This talk will present the essentials researchers need to know about RDAs activities and the impact of the open access movement on research at the Photon and Neutron facilities.
