ESS Facility Tour

ESS Facility Tour - Friday Afternoon

As a part of the ICANS meeting tradition, conference participants are invited to join a guided tour of the European Spallation Source (ESS) facility.


Tour Schedule

  • When: Friday 2026-04-17
  • Departure Clarion Hotel Malmö Live: 12:30
  • Arrival at ESS: ~13:00
  • Departure ESS: 15:30
  • Arrival Clarion Hotel Malmö Live: ~16:00

 


Tour Options

Participants must select one tour option. Tour selection will be requested when collecting the welcome package at the start of the conference. Tour group participation is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Available Tours

  1. Rad-Waste Tour
    • Active Cell Facility (ESS Hot Cell)
    • Rad-waste treatment facility (H09)
  2. Accelerator Tour
    • Main Control Room
    • Beam Instrumentation System
    • Klystron Gallery
  3. Target Utilities Tour
    • Liquid hydrogen system for the moderator
    • Target helium cooling system
    • Moderator/reflector water system
  4. Instruments Tour
    • Selected instruments for beam on target

Mandatory Safety Induction

All tour participants must watch a 5 minute safety induction before boarding the bus. The time-slot for this will be available in the schedule when confirmed.

Important: Participation in the safety induction is mandatory. Participants who do not attend the training will not be allowed to join the tour.


Identification & Site Access

  • ID will be checked by ESS security upon arrival
  • Please bring a valid passport or nation ID card
  • Tour participants will receive the required personal protective equipment (PPE) on ESS site

Required Clothing

For safety reasons, all participants must wear:

  • Flat, closed shoes
  • Long trousers


The following are not permitted:

  • Open shoes, sandals or high heels
  • Shorts or skirts


Participants not complying with the dress code will not be allowed to join the tour.
