Welcome to the fifth ESS ILL User Meeting
The European Spallation Source (ESS) and the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) launched a joint User Meeting in 2018, with the first edition held in Grenoble. This successful meeting provided a valuable forum to review the achievements of the neutron user community, present the status and perspectives of both facilities, and, most importantly, to look ahead to the scientific opportunities shaping the future of neutron science.
Since then, the meeting has been held biennially, alternating between the two facilities. Following a fully remote edition in 2020, the community reconvened in person in Lund in 2022. In 2024, ILL hosted the meeting in Grenoble, continuing the strong tradition of scientific exchange and community dialogue.
In 2026, Europe’s two neutron facilities warmly invite the community to the ESS–ILL User Meeting, providing a forum for facility updates, scientific exchange, and collective reflection on the future of neutron science. In addition to the main programme, the community will also have the opportunity to organise satellite meetings around the event.
The future of neutron scattering is bright, opening new scientific opportunities across disciplines. A shared strategic vision between facilities and users will be key to strengthening the European neutron landscape and securing long-term sustainability and impact.
