Description
Designs of future high-power accelerators are facing a major challenge in terms of minimizing uncontrolled primary beam losses in areas aiming at hands-on maintenance of accelerator components. At the European Spallation Source (ESS), the canonical <1 W/m loss rate corresponds to an unprecedented <200 ppb relative loss (at 5 MW).
Transport sections offer the possibility of installing collimator systems to convert some of the downstream uncontrolled losses to localized controlled losses. The collimators can potentially also mask sensitive regions or components and mitigate non-nominal beam conditions.
The challenges and benefits of a collimator system at beam energies of a few GeV are believed to be relevant and somewhat common to many high-power facilities.

Collimation systems are installed for different purposes, and different considerations have to be made depending on the application and the machine. This talk gives an overview of some design constraints that have to be taken into account when designing collimation systems, for example for the LHC at CERN. Examples of different considerations include betatron and momentum collimation, movable versus fixed devices, multi-stage and choice of materials. Some of the simulation tools used at CERN will also be briefly mentioned, as well as techniques for monitoring beam losses.Speaker: Dr Roderik Bruce (CERN)

Overview of Present and Upgraded SPS-to-LHC Collimation System¶ 30m Linneasalen
Linneasalen
ESS AB
Tunavägen 24, LundThe nominal operation of the LHC foresees injection of beams capable of damaging Transfer Line (TL) and LHC equipment if uncontrolled losses occur. The SPS-to-LHC TLs are thus equipped with a passive protection system: a set of collimators (TCDIs) aimed at intercepting particles with large amplitude and/or mis-steered beams. An overview of the present system is given, with particular emphasis on operational aspects and experience: accurate procedures for beam based alignment of collimators and setup validation, dedicated system of interlocks for jaw positioning and overall collimator functionality, issues encountered during operation and improvements. In view of the improved beam brightness foreseen by the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) and High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) projects, the upgrade of the system is presently under study. Main design challenges, simulation tools and results are summarised: system layout and phase coverage including geometrical uncertainties, choice of suitable materials able to stand the head load and provide sufficient attenuation, protection of downstream devices.Speaker: Mr Alessio Mereghetti (UMAN and CERN) - 16:30 → 17:00
