Description
The budget pressure provided by the cost categories and NSS overall budget, combined with the requirements for a high power spallation source and a very tight schedule, have created an urgent need to address the level of cost optimisation in the instrument suite. 50% of the cost of a spallation source instrument typically lies in the optics and shielding areas. Nonetheless, much of the scope reduction presented to management so far unfortunately has centred on the removal of choppers, sample environment and reduced detector coverage.
This meeting is being organised to help the instrument teams reduce the cost of optics and shielding overall, so that more scope is available in the other areas and the instruments are more likely to meet their budget objectives.
